Clinical documents are often used as legal, regulatory, administrative, and clinical records, yet traditional CDA authentication mechanisms do not provide cryptographic proof of authorship, integrity, or delegated authority. This session introduces the HL7 CDA Digital Signatures and Delegation of Rights Implementation Guide and explains how it extends CDA to support non-repudiation digital signatures, long-term signature validation, signer role and purpose assertions, co-signatures, counter-signatures, and delegated signing authority.
Participants will learn how XAdES-X-L digital signatures are embedded directly within CDA documents, how signer identity and intent are represented, how Delegation of Rights is expressed using SAML assertions, and how recipients verify document integrity, signer identity, and delegated authority. The session also explores implementation patterns, multiple signer scenarios, and opportunities to apply these capabilities to modern document exchange workflows.
